It seems that bentonite rather than calcium montmorillonite is most often recommended in bowel tonic recipes that I have read. Before perusing this site, I attributed that fact to lack of general public knowledge of different kinds of clay (and probably that's partly true), but after reading a couple of statements here indicating that sodium montmorillonite or bentonite is preferable in such applications, I see there's more to it than that.

Does it have to do, perhaps, with the way bentonite expands, or...?

I'm thinking of putting one of Richard Schultz's recommended bowel tonic recipes together shortly, and I'd intended to use Pascalite or Terramin for the clay ingredient until I came upon this material.

Thank you and all the best,
Don

Hi Don -

I've done alot of work with numerous calcium and sodium bentonites/montmorillonites. Yes, there is ALOT of ignorance out there speaking with a voice of knowledge.

I actually just made a batch of internal clay that consists of 4 different clays... but predominantly made up of one sodium bentonite and one calcium montmorillonite.

The swelling potential of the sodium bentonite makes it's actual action IN the large intestine different. Sodium bentonite has a far greater absorption potential than most calcium bentonites ( as apposed to ADsorption ).

The fact that it swells so much also makes it's travel through the large intestine slower. This can also cause more constipation issues with those with digestive problems; the sodium bentonites can absorb alot of matter. As they absorb, they start to become much denser.

The extensive work of Dr. E. Earl Irons, Schultze, and many others here in the United States, concerning the benefit of sodium bentonites in the stomach/large intestine should not be ignored.

I wouldn't disregard Terramin or Pascalite. Some people respond very well to Pascalite and not Terramin, and others to Terramin and not Pascalite.

One must view each clay as different and unique.

Best Regards,
