Question transferred from comment board on main site:
Adam: It's written in the directions to not have the clay come in contact with any metals, I was wondering why?

Hi Adam:
Hydrated clay can strip metal ions from any source of metal. The rule of thumb is: Do not allow clay to come into contact with substances that you wouldn't actually ingest into the body.
Subjecting clay, for instance, to 99.999% pure gold or silver is not an issue. However, steel alloys contain metals you wouldn't want to ingest.
One should even be cautious with plastics and hydrated clay. The issue is not really the plastic, but substances that may have been stored in plastic containers previously. I sometimes use plastic paint buckets to store large amounts of hydrated clay in ( due to convenience )... However, never would I personally store clay in such a bucket if it had previously contained actual paint, even if the bucket/pale has been well cleaned. _________________ ~ Jason

|
|
Hi,
I have been using a plain white ceramic coffee mug to contain my bentonite. I am aware that glazes use some fairly nasty chemicals.
Would the clay be able to draw any of these chemicals through the glaze or are such containers safe to use?
Perhaps glass (pyrex) would be a better choice of container?

The grounding is made with a metal roll mill...I think argiletz clays too???? Thought it shouldn't touch metal.... the company here in NZ cerifies me that they are using a magnet to get ridd of all bits of metal in the clay. What do you think? What do they use to grind it? I suppose when they extract it they put it onto their machine's shovel and drive with their tractors all over it too???? When you recommend to be careful, is it only with hydrated clay?
Thanks turquoisegrece. |
