|
|
Greetings!
First off, I must say that I absolutely love the site!! I've read several pages over and over in my quest for knowledge regarding healing clay and geophagy in particular.
I have been using clay internally for Crohn's disease for over a month now with tremendous results. Prior to introducing clay, I was in the midst of yet another mild flare (I've had Crohn's for over 20 years) with diarrhea several times per day despite treatment with western medicine. Well, 3 days into clay treatment my bowel movements normalized and I've felt fine ever since!
I recently acquired some Pascalite clay, and it is noted on the bottle that 1/2 t. provides 27mg or 150% of the US RDA for iron. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to have an iron overdose with prolonged use of clays containing high iron levels such as Pascalite?
I also recently ordered some Terramin, and noticed from the certificate of analysis they provided that there is a 4.35% iron content. Any idea how this would translate to the usual recommendation of 1 t. per day of clay?
Any advice or information you could provide me with would be much appreciated.
Mike

Hi Mike!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm pleased you are experiencing good results with bentonite/healing clay.
An iron overdose using healing clays internally is a concern, especially for those with iron related medical conditions, such as haemochromatosis.
Toxicity may occur when consuming 20-60 mg of iron PER kg of body weight ( for adults ) per day.
That would be quite alot of Pascalite per day.
Of course, the primary concern for iron toxicity is iron salt tablets, which are VERY readily adsorbed into the body.
I've never seen a case of iron toxicity, or heard of any complaints, as the result of using clays internally.
In fact, there have been rare cases where JUST the opposite problem occurs:

This isn't to say that people should be scared about the use of a good bentonite... Just that like any powerful healing substance, it should be used with understanding.
Large amounts of hydrated bentonite can be used internally for accute problems for short durations... Otherwise, the wisdom of Raymond Dexreit serves well:
Use clay internally on the following schedule:
Taken for 4 days, off for three days, on for 3 days, off for four days...
I use bentonite regularly, and my metabolic lab results never indicate any problem with iron or potassium, which would be indicative of a problem.
Kind Regards, |

Thanks for the post Jason. I didn't anticipate it to be a problem....in fact, I currently suffer from slight anemia. Ironically, I received the Pascalite just a couple days after I got word from my gastroenterologist! He recommended I take iron tabs for a few months, so I would expect the Pascalite could replace it. Iron tabs have given me stomach upset in the past, so I have yet another reason to be thankful to have found out about healing clay.
Thanks also for the reminder about the 4 on 3 off / 3 on 4 off regimen. I've been taking 1 t. per day without any breaks, so I should really try this out. I finally located a used copy of Our Earth Our Cure a few days ago, so I'm excited to learn more from the master.
I'd like to try out using the clay magma preparation that you mention on the site....I'm curious, do all clays hydrate with roughly 1 part clay & 4 parts water? I prepared a small batch of magma using Redmond Clay and wound up with some left over water which I just poured off.... |

Hi Mike:
No, not all clays hydrate the same. The rich green sodium bentonites hydrate at about 4X the water by volume.
Calcium bentonites with low sodium content are closer to equal portions of water and clay. Redmond Clay, if I remember correctly, is about 1 part clay to 3 parts water.
My treatment philosophy is based on common sense evidence-based science. Use clay internally as much as needed to eliminate symptoms ( in situations where the individual is noticing an improvement with clay use ). It is my experience that when clay IS effective for a given condition, the action is corrective.
Thus, eventually one can back off to an "on and off" usage schedule without the symptoms returning.
It is good to keep in mind that even with daily use of clays and a nearly perfect diet, it can easily take six months to a year to completely correct digestion related disease.
Kind Regards, |

| Thanks again for all the great information Jason....both on the website, and in the forum! I just finished mixing up a batch of Pascalite magma as I ran out of the Redmond Clay mix the other day. My Terramin should arrive in the next couple days, and then next month I'm looking at getting some of the Ultra-Ventilated Montmorillonite Green Clay from Argiletz. I'm in it for the long haul!! It still seems so strange to me that after all these years of having Western medicine pounded into my skull, from both my specialists as well as my parents (my father was a Dr. as well)....the solution for me was as simple as the earth itself. |

| I recently bought Edible Earth bentonite and montmorillonite clay. It has a whopping 165 mg.of iron for only 1 teaspoon of the powder. Jason, given what you said about the on and off again schedule should I still try to get a clay that is not soooooooooooooo high in iron? |

| ...most clays are high in iron. However, people using edible clays with normal metabolisms have never been demonstrated to actually have elevated iron levels in-body. It is those rare individuals with iron-intolerance issues that need to be careful. |
