Dear Friends,
Another study being picked up by the press indicates that breech
presentations can be safely delivered vaginally “if strict criteria are
met.” The study is published in the April issue of the American Journal
of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Am J Obstet Gynecol 2006;194:1002-1011.
According to the news report, pelvimetry, continuous monitoring of the
fetal heart rate, and early active pushing resulted in outcomes just as
good as planned cesarean section, and 71% of planned vaginal births were successful.
I have not read the actual published study, but you can read about it in
the Reuters news report below. This study, combined with the mounting
criticisms of the infamous Hannah Term Breech Trial (which lead to
policies of cesarean sections for all breech presenting babies), should
be useful for supporting the idea of vaginal breech births.
Sincerely,
Susan Hodges, “gatekeeper” _________________ Alisa McAffee,
