Im sort of a beginner at this. I have french green illite clay. It does not swell so much, so there is no way i can use a 1" thick clay pack right? Is there a clay u can recommend that swells so that im able to make a 1" clay pack. I tried looking for an article on this on how to make a clay pack but could not find one. Could u please help me out wit these questions.
Thank you |

Greetings,
Although Illite is a non-swelling clay, one can still make a poultice 1/2 - 1 inch thick once the clay is hydrated ( with equal parts water, i.e. 1 part water to 1 part clay ).
Clays that contain between 1-3% sodium content will usually swell. This includes all "sodium" bentonites and a few calcium bentonites.

Thank you for the reply
I have used 1 teaspoon of green illite in 8 0z of water i let that sit for 24 hours. It did not swell much like you said. So i poured all the water out of the cup so it was just the clay. The clay felt very liquidy, it wasnt like a gel at all. So my question is how do you when the clay is fully hydrated. I think it would be impossible to make a 1/2 thick with a clay thats not hard. Please help me out here. Thank you so much |
